The BSA Sweet 17 is specifically designed for the .17 HMR and is calibrated and optimized for .17 HMR compensation.

I’m using one on a new Savage .17 HMR that I’m building up now.

Exploding Rifle Targets – Slow Motion Video – FedLine Cisco Router

Well, a few folks asked if I could slow down the explosion part of the video. So, after figuring out the process, we got it done.

Savage .17 HMR – BSA Sweet 17 3-12 x 40 Rifle Scope (on sale)

It’s time to build up a new rifle to share with my kids (uh, yeah honey, it’s for the kids :>).

I’m waiting for the Savage .17 HMR to go on sale at my local stores or Cabelas. I picked the Savage .17 HMR due to the cost/performance/accuracy and overall value. It’s really hard to beat.

I found the BSA Sweet 17 3-12 x 40 scope on sale at Cabelas online for $49.95 (hurry – there’s still some left). This scope is normally $129 – $149. I know the BSA Sweet 17 isn’t preferred by a few marksmen but I have found it to be very adequate for 100 – 150 yds for varmints.

I’ll keep this rig in my truck when traveling around the back roads in rural Nebraska. There’s plenty of opportunities here, especially in the West.

Oh – gotta put a camera mount on it, too. I wanna share the fun through recording videos (only the hits, of course!).

Burris 6.5-20x50mm Rifle Scope

The Verminator put a 6.5 – 20 x 50mm Burris scope on my Bushmaster yesterday, and now I need to go to the park and sight it in. (Did I say that out loud?)

So, now I have my .223 Bushmaster back in action, with a new-to-me, high dollar…. OK, medium dollar, scope on it. Add to that the new, Smooth-As-Butter, two stage sniper trigger and all I need now is a couple of hundred squirrels to shoot. To get ready for that I think I’m going to take it down to the range and see if I can put 10 rounds in the same 1/2 inch hole at 100 yards.

WOW I’m Looking forward to that….

On another note, the Verminator, who has really bad luck with .17HMR’s, just got his Ruger 77/17 back from the gunsmith. The barrel that came on the rifle had a “SLIGHT” problem, where it drifted rounds across the target as it got warm. It was really noticeable, and made the gun not worth a sh*t as far as accuracy went. So he is also feeling the need to run to the gun club and see how the new barrel works out.

Squirrel Hunting Scopes & Optics

Here is a list of cheap scopes that will make your squirrel hunting just that much better. There isn’t any reason to spend a bunch on optics when most of the rodents I’ve ever shot were under 200 yards. I use a cheap Bushnell 6x18x50 on my .17hmr, and I’ve never had any problems hitting what I was shooting at. I also use a Bushnell on my .223 Bushmaster, and I paid less than $40.00 for that scope because it was used.

Cheap Scopes & Rings

I bought my cheap Bushnell scope today. The one I said I was going to get at Bi-Mart or Wal-Mart, I actually ended up getting at the Sportsman’s Warehouse for $119.99; $10.00 cheaper than Wal-Mart. I was there with my brother-in-law, VERMINATOR, who shows up here and writes something once in awhile when I beg.

So, I was like, “hey give me that cheap Bushnell 6-18x50mm scope for my .17HMR.” to the counter guy, and he’s like, “why, your not really going to use it for shooting are you? You know you can just tape a toilet paper roll to the top of your rifle and pretend you have a scope and it will work just as well.” (VERMINATOR is laughing at me and they are looking at some $10,000.00 scope for the VERMINATOR’s Air Soft Rifle….)

I hate gun snobs! It just gets worse.

I asked the guy behind the counter for a set of rings for the Bushnell scope so that I can mount it to my new, cool, .Savage .17 HMR. He asked me what kind I wanted and I said, “well Weavers will work, they are what’s on there now”. And he laughed at me again and said, “Yea, they would be. I guess if your going to buy a Bushnell Scope, you would also buy Weaver rings.” He then goes on to say how they are the cheapest rings on the market, but it won’t matter to me, cause I bought a Bushnell and ain’t going to hit anything anyway.

I am now angry. I like being cheap. Why the hell would I spend $500.00 for a so-so Leupold or Burris, or $1,200.00 for a nice ATN, Night Force or Leupold scope, when I’m putting it on a $200.00 rifle that is only good out to around 165 yards? I’m pretty sure that my cheap rifle and scope combination will do just fine shooting sage rats at 100 yards.

So, we are going to have a VERMINATOR vs. SquirrelSniper shoot off. The VERMINATOR’s new “whatever make and model” .17HMR from “some third world country” and a 4.5-14 Burris scope vs. my new Savage stainless and synthetic with the AccuTrigger and a new 6-18 x 50mm Bushnell scope and cheap weaver rings.

We are going to try 5 different boxes of .17HMR ammunition (I might sneak a .22 Magnum into the VERMINATOR’s rifle by accident.), we will take the “bullet speed measuring thingy” he has, some targets and a digital camera, and let you know what we find out about the .17HMR, Bushnell, Burris and cheap rings etc… when we’re done.
