I went to the Yakima Gun show with the Verminator this weekend, and did pretty well, but it was also kind of weird. I’ve never seen so many guys scrambling to get their hands on primers and gunpowder. After the last show we went to in the Tri-Cities last month, we went over to the Sportsman’s warehouse to look for powder and primers, and their shelves were empty. The same shortage is still taking place, because we saw guys who had primers, selling them for $75 or more per brick, because they could get it, and people still wanted more.

I guess one way to control the part of the population that lives in rural America, and shoots, is to control reloading components and live ammunition. Since they decided to reduce the price of gas, after the economy collapsed, they changed tactics and decided that the next best way to control the rural population would be to take away their ability to defend themselves… or attack; if the Idjits in Washington can’t back off and leave well enough alone…

In the meantime, there doesn’t seem to be a shortage on .17HMR, so I will continue to wage war against sage rats when they start popping up in the spring.

By Woodybob

City folks in NYC, who normally dress as well as they eat, are forgoing lavish dinner parties and instead, settling for a type of dinner one might find in a West Virginian mobile home. With the stock market in shreds, banks closing and a government in serious doubt and debt, city dwellers have turned to eating a native cousin of the city rat; tree squirrels.

Carrie Bradshaw, Samantha Jones, Charlotte York and Miranda Hobbes were recently spotted in Central Park kneeled down with dress shoes on, behind an evergreen shrub, with crossman sling shots in hand. No, they were not waiting for Mr. Big to walk by for a sudden ambush attack. The four gorgeous girls were waiting to ambush a wandering squirrel unaware of the uncertain motives these four girls had.

Squirrels are no longer safe in the metro-hip districts of New York City. Dinner parties once featuring NY Strips and Filet Mignons are now being replaced by more affordable meat; one that requires a slingshot or high-powered pellet gun to catch, a pocketknife to skin and a few classic squirrel recipes found at www.woodybobs.com/squirrelrecipes.html.

At a recent dinner party charity event for the Association of Melvin Brooks Cancer Research, squirrel fillet, with sides of fruits and fresh vegetables, were carried atop sterling silver trays and served by white suited, bow tied, waiters. The buffet featured a popular WoodyBobs.com squirrel recipe – “Fried Squirrel and Gravy.” The girls in their swanky dresses and the guys dressed as neatly as James Bond, devoured squirrel meat and drank Night Train with the gusto of an Arkansayer.

Meanwhile, Back in West Virginia, Norma was cooking the family’s nightly dinner ‘Sunday Chicken’, which was once cooked by her great grandmother during the Great Depression in 1929. Sunday chicken was a mere joke during the depression, it was cooked every day, or at least any time a squirrel wandered into the yard or a nearby tree…

I’ll stop whining about there and get along with the posting of squirrel videos.

I won’t be posting any of my own until I figure out what’s wrong with my video program, but I will starting posting some from Youtube and other video sites so that we at least have something to talk about in the forums.

I mounted a video camera to my Savage 17HMR so that I could video tape the squirrels I shot last Saturday in Unity, Oregon. It took me awhile to figure out how to do it, but when I was done, it looked way more professional than I could have hoped for, especially since I did the whole job without any duct tape at all.

Here’s how I mounted my Sony Handycam to my .17HMR rifle:

First I went to Wal-Mart and bought the tallest set of rings they had. Wal-Mart had pretty good prices on their rings, and I got a set of Leupold scope rings for less than $17.00.

I then went to the local camera supply store and bought a whole bunch of odds and ends that they had in their junk drawer. The main things though, that I ended up needing for my scope mounted video camera, were the base screw and washers that are used to screw video cameras to all tripods.

I then went home and dug through a box of over 150 scope bases that I bought a few years ago at an auction. I ended up finding one that was the right length, and fit the rings I bought at Wal-Mart to a “T”. Then, all I had to do was drill a hole in the base so that I could mount the screw so that it would hold my video camera to the rail.

I then attached the new set of scope rings to my scope, which now has 4 scope rings on it instead of the usual two. Unfortunately, the rail with the video camera on it now goes over the vertical adjustment knob on my scope, but, oh well, I can live with that.

After getting the whole thing put together and mounted on the rifle, the thing was crazy top heavy. So I ran back to Wal-Mart and bought a bi-pod for $40.00. Once I got the bi-pod attached to the rifle, everything worked like a charm.

I then sighted in on the neighbor’s house down the block. (Don’t try this if you live in a town with jumpy cops. LOL) When I put the cross hairs on the scope on the doorknob on my neighbor’s house, the camera was dead on. As a matter of fact, the knob was actually 3/4 of the way down the screen, which is perfect for catching squirrels on tape when you pop them into the air with a Hornaday 17HMR ballistic tip.

Here’s a picture of the rifle without the camera. Notice the extra set of rings and the rail on top of the scope:

Here’s a picture of the rifle with the video camera mounted to the scope:

Here’s a picture that shows you where the action takes place when you pull the trigger. You can see how the picture captures your subject about 1/4 of the way up from the bottom of the camera.

I saw some ground squirrels today, sitting in a field right next to the road. I’m not talking about a road out in the middle of the country, but a road right in town. The owner of the property is holding out for a ton of money, so the contractors in town haven’t built anything on the land yet. The squirrels just sit there, right alongside the sidewalk, while little old ladies and their wiener dogs walk by.

Every time I drive by, I want to pull over, get out my .17HMR and start shooting .17 grain Hornaday ballistic tips into their little furry bodies. But, since it’s in town, and I’d probably have to shoot across a major intersection, I’m talking traffic lights and all here folks, I figure i should set a good example for my kids and not get arrested for any more weapons violations. (Especially remembering what a pain the last one was…)

Speaking of contractors in Walla Walla, after the squirrels attacked the house in January, I finally got everything fixed back up. I went to WallaWallaContractors.com and got a roofing company to fix my roof and facia, and had a fencing contractor fix the fence damage. I even had to have an Electrician from Walla Walla Electric come out and fix some lights that got knocked over in the windstorm. The only thing left is the tree, or what’s left of it, that needs to come out. I’ll probably wait and do that one myself, instead of calling a tree removal company.

On another note, I think I’m going to do a PETA video tonight or tomorrow and post it on youtube. I have about 1 hour of footage of me missing squirrels that I’m shooting at. That should make them happy.

I know this is a squirrel shooting website that drifts into shooting other varmints from time to time, but I just had to show you guys this bunny rabbit video that is posted over on youtube. I’ve never seen so many rabbits in one place. The rabbits in this video are almost as thick as the squirrels are when we go ground squirrel hunting in the Spring. If anyone knows where we can find a bunny rabbit infestation like this, let me know and I’ll see if I can get a couple of guys to show up for a bunny rabbit shoot off. LOL

Just click on the play button to watch what a .17 HMR Ruger will do to a rabbit, and then click on it again if it doesn’t start.

I’m back from Mexico, and as soon as I get well, I think I’ll start looking for squirrels to shoot.

Shooting squirrels is way better than sitting in Cancun with 90 degree temps and 99.9% humidity. Sure, Cancun sounds like a good time when it’s snowing and 20 degrees outside, but Cancun’s humidity takes all the fun out of it. Cancun can’t even come close to touching Cabo San Lucas, which is on the Baja peninsula, and is dry.

Here is a list of my current ailments:

Runny, snotty eyes for the last 6 days.

Really bad scars from the bad Henna Tattoo I had done on my face… (Could be why the eyes aren’t working.)

Lungs are full of fluid and I have a bad cough.

Kidneys hurt so bad I can barely walk or move.

Wait, everything hurts so I can barely move.

Queasy.

Diarrhea.

I’ll write soon…. if I live!

Bob Rich over at Rimfirehunting.blogspot.com said I was a little hard on the DEP Biologist, so here’s my small retraction…. “Sorry” DEP Guy… (while looking down and scuffing my toe in the dust.) LOL

Bob said that:

NOTE: In all fairness, the DEP Biologist did get back to me and he has always responded to my letters. It was the Sergeant that simply didn’t believe me. Here’s what the biologist wrote:

For those of you who haven’t read Bob’s cougar story, go to http://rimfirehunting.blogspot.com/2007/09/hidden-dangers-at-roraback.html and read it.

In the post I did on Bob’s cougar story and my wolf story, I didn’t mention that the cattle rancher who gave me permission to hunt on their property told me that there had been two cougar sightings on their property the day before, within 10 minutes of each other, 3 miles apart. You might think a cougar could do 3 miles in 10 minutes, but not when one mile is straight up over a mountain, and another mile is straight down the other side. (The other issue is, “if you see one, there’s 10 more watching you”.)

She also told me that the year before, they had had a bowhunter come in all white and shaky and tell them that a cougar had been stalking him, and that he had turned around and seen it just in time to get up from where he was sitting and attack it first. (Yelling, waiving his arms etc…) He told the lady that owns the ranch that he would never bow hunt again without taking a pistol or rifle with him, even if he got a ticket for it.

I also play poker with a guy who says he has been stalked by a cougar three times in the Blue Mountains of Oregon. Twice, when elk hunting, he has followed his own trail back to camp in the snow and seen cougar tracks covering his. Another time, when he stopped to use the outhouse at Target Meadows, above the Tollgate ranger station, he came out of the outhouse to see that a cougar had walked around the outhouse three times when he was in there; it had just started to snow as he left his truck.

We also lost an elderly man, who was a diabetic, in that same area this year. He left camp to pick huckleberries, and just disappeared. One of the search guys said that he ran into a cougar 20 feet off the trail, about 100 yards from the guys trailer. He also said there was a ton of bear sign too. (The whole thing freaks me out a little since I got lost up there once when I was a kid…. Overnight! Ahhhh!)
