Even Squirrels Kill Squirrels; Why Shouldn’t We?

This is part of a study done on infanticide within a population of California Ground Squirrels. The study tosses out some hypothesis on why some California ground squirrels kill and eat young animals within their own species. It looks like most of the murders were female with a litter, and in most cases they ate the young they killed. The young squirrels they killed weren’t their own, so the strategy looks like it is twofold; Kill other female’s offspring to feed their own and to cut down on competition from other squirrel’s offspring so their’s have a better chance of survival.

I knew there was a reason I liked squirrel hunting; they’re creepy cannibals and deserve to die!
